Electric vehicles are becoming the next big thing, and public transportation is along for the ride. London is making all their single decker busses emission free, and in the Netherlands Amsterdam is planning on having all electric buses by 2025, and recently, two cities in the country have converted their whole bus fleet to electric!

These two fleets are in the cities of Eindhoven and Helmond, and together have a count of 43 buses, which are all now zero emission.

One of the biggest issues the bus company had to fix was the limited range of the vehicles. To do this they are using ultra-fast charging technology, and a vehicle rotation system. The buses that run during the day can charge within 30 minutes! The bus terminus has been converted from a diesel garage to a charging garage, and there are a few extra buses on reserve that can be cycled in if any of the buses in operation are caught with low batteries. The buses charge using connection points that are similar to those used on trams, on the roof of the bus. So no need to fiddle with the bonnet to get to the plug socket.

Bart Schmeink, the CEO of the company that owns this fleet, Transdev Netherlands, has said: “This is an important step leading to sustainable bus transportation and a glimpse at the future of public transport.”

There is lots of interest in this electric public transport fleet. Transdev Netherlands will share information and it's experiences of running an electric bus fleet to companies and governing bodies across the globe during an international convention in Paris later this year.
