After an unsettled 2020 for us all, the start of 2021 isn't that much different. With ongoing lockdowns and restrictions across the country, the January blues are being felt by most of us. In a month where SMMT reported the lowest number of new cars registered in January since 1970, thankfully there's some good news in that scrap car prices were on the rise again.

It's good news for owners of cars ready to scrap, the prices in January were at a real high. They surpassed the average prices of 2020 and tipped over the £200 mark with an average value of £202!

January's price increase made it the ninth consecutive month to show an increase to the average scrap car value. Prices were up 5% compared to December and up by 27% compared to January 2020.

There are many factors that can influence the scrap value of your car, including the global demand for scrap metal, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and location of your car.

About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It's updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We've taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Top Cars Scrapped in January

For the last seven months the Ford Focus has been the most common car scrapped with CarTakeBack. The average scrap price for a Ford Focus increased by a considerable 14% in January to £195, compared to £171 in December.

January saw little change to the top five cars scrapped during the month, the Peugeot 206 dropped from 4th place to 5th, switching places with the Vauxhall Astra.

There have been increase to all to the average values of the top five cars. The car in the top spot, the Ford Focus has seen the biggest increase, 14%.
