Last month we reported an increase to scrap car prices, and for the third month running prices have increased, this time a further 3% in May. This is welcome news for customers wishing to sell their old car as scrap metal.

The current scrap car prices are at 181% on our index. That means that they're 81% higher than the prices in May last year. The prices on offer for scrap cars are currently at the highest levels seen in 2017!

There are positive signs that prices could see a further slight increase, though we can never be sure that scrap metal prices will improve because of the fluctuating values of metal. As prices could fall at any time, like they did earlier this year, now could be a great time to sell your old car while prices are healthy!

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It's updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. The prices are shown as a percentage, using the first month as the base price.

We've taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, by adjusting the prices to show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
