The benefits of car recycling

There are many ways you can help the environment, and as it's World Environment Day, we thought we'd run through the benefits of recycling old cars, and how it can help the planet.

Recycling the materials

Legally, vehicles have to be recycled by a scrap yard with an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF)Licence. This ensures the cars are treated in the most environmentally way possible.

During the recycling process scrap cars have all of the fluids removed, which are processed for reuse. The solid materials such as metal and plastic are separated, cleaned, and prepared for use in manufacturing.

ATF sites have sealed flooring to prevent toxic fluids leaking into the ground, and they make sure at least 95% of the weight of the car is recycled. That means no chemicals ending up in the water table, and less than 5% of every vehicle going to landfill. Pretty impressive, isn't it?!

Parts salvage

When cars are recycled, any reusable parts are removed and used in the repair of vehicles still on the road. Reusing these parts keeps otherwise good motors on the road for longer, and means that a new part doesn't need to be made, which uses energy and raw materials.

Newer cars are cleaner

Reuse is the purest form of recycling, but when your car starts to get old or go wrong, the emissions it pumps out can increase. Running an old, high emissions car over an extended period causes more pollution than the manufacture and running of a new, low emissions car. There are plenty of cleaner combustion engine and hybrid cars about. There are also electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen e-Golf, Renault Zoe, and the high-end Tesla S, which are leading the way in environmentally friendly motoring.

Ditching the car all together

Some people choose to swap their cars for greener modes of transport all together, such as cycling, walking, buses and trains. This really benefits the environment as the less cars there are on the road, the less pollution there will be.
