While we are always happy to mark a day with a theme some may argue is less than critical (National Ice Cream day is the kind of thing that springs to mind – who doesn’t love an ice cream truck!)… We are keen to share news about awareness days with a little more meat behind them, no, not World Meat Day! And our colleagues at Charity Car told us that today is the International Day of Charity!

Now you may wonder what this has to do with cars, but the lovely folks over at Charity Car spend every day working with charities - looking after those of you who decide to donate your old car to a good cause. We are very proud of our scheme that enables old cars to get turned into cash for your chosen charity, and this is the perfect day to celebrate it!

In just the last couple of months Charity Car has hit some major milestones. Not only have they now signed up over 100 Official Charity Car Partners, they’ve also seen the largest ever single donation - £6,444 raised for Alzheimer’s Research UK. The cherry on the cake was celebrating passing on over half a million pounds worth of donations! Those funds have helped research cures for diseases, supported communities, protected environments, rescued animals and improved lives. What an amazing use for your old car!

We don’t intend to embark on a full history lesson here so no need to skip to the end just yet, but the background to the International Day of Charity is actually really interesting…

Hungary proposed its introduction to the United Nations (UN) in the lead up to the Agenda on Sustainable Development. Introduced in 2012, September 5th was chosen to commemorate Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who passed away on this date, as she had received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress". The UN had recognised that eradicating poverty is the greatest global challenge we face and key to sustainable development. By everyone playing a role in “people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership” the UN said we have the potential to transform our lives and our planet. In charitable terms they could have 'dropped the mic'!

We love that Charity Car helps people make their own unique contribution to good causes and in doing so fund so much vital charitable work. If you want to find out more about the scheme then you can visit the website at www.CharityCar.co.uk. They are always happy to hear from you but today the Charity Car team is even more cheerful than usual!
