Don't always trust your sat nav!

Sometimes we rely on satellite navigation when driving to destinations we don’t know, but when the sat nav doesn’t know where it's going it can cause some major issues.

We've heard of lorries and vans stuck in cul-de-sacs, narrow paths, or even footpaths in the countryside. Sat navs can even lead you to rightly named place but in different county, or country! Something that happened to a group of friends who ended up in Lille, Belgium, not the City of Lille in France!

Motorist can become too reliant on sat navs and ignore road signs which can sometimes leave them in a difficult situation, like when roads are flooded, which we have seen in the recent months can claim vehicles and put drivers in deep water. Like these fellow motorists, who got stuck in over 1 metre of icy water in Leicestershire in December 2017, and had to be rescued by police and volunteer 4x4 responders! Unsurprisingly, their car was a write-off.

Sat navs have also lead drivers towards cliff edges, stairways, lakes and rivers! One lucky BMW driver was balancing on the edge of a cliff top above Todmorden, where his sat nav took them down a path that could have seen deadly consequences. This did result in a £1,000 fine and 6 penalty points though, thanks to their lack of common sense!

If you know where you're going but your sat nav suggests an alternative route, like telling you to make a U-turn in the middle of a dual carriageway, it's probably the safest option to follow road signs or stick to the route you know.
