It's that time of year again and the new '16 car registration plates are out today. Are you lucky enough to be picking yours up from the car dealership? Or like us, having to settle for playing spot the first new reg plate of the year?!

It got us thinking in the CarTakeBack office about personalised registration plates and what the most expensive number plates in the world are. With the DVLA estimating that over £2 billion in tax revenue has been raised at its various plate auctions in the UK in the last 25 years, there's certainly demand for them.

The highly sought after 'F 1' plate held the record in Britain selling for £440,000 in 2008 and adorned a wealthy Bradford businessman's McLaren-Mercedes SLR.25. The owner tried to sell the plate, 6 years later for £10 million, but later took it off sale and reports say that it now resides on his Bugatti Veyron (£10 million is a bit pricey!).

In 2014 the British record, formerly held by the 'F 1' plate, was broken when DVLA sold the plate '25 O' to Ferrari dealer John Collins for over half a million pounds! The plate is thought to take pride of place on his Ferrari 250SWB once owned by the legendary Eric Clapton.

Both of these sales pale in comparison to the famous registration '1', purchased by Saeed Khouri from Abu Dhabi, for a record £7 million! Although it may seem a highly extravagant purchase, we're pleased to hear that proceeds from the vanity plate auctions, held in a lavish hotel in the Emirates' capital, go to a rehabilitation centre for victims of traffic accidents.

Although we're not expecting Eric's old Ferrari to be coming our way any time soon, we are used to getting the odd phone call from customers worrying that their cherished plate might get scrapped along with their old car!

Don't worry, if you're lucky enough to have a personalised registration plate, we have all the info you need on how to transfer it before you recycle or sell your old car.
