In this latest look at cars of the future we're talking about safety. In the not so distant future new cars will know if you've been in an accident and send for help for you. Some models of car already use this technology, but by 2018 it will be compulsory for all new cars sold in Europe to have the technology to call the emergency services if you are in an accident.

The eCall system is triggered by typical signs of a crash such as extreme deceleration of the car, and airbags being deployed. There will also be a button on the dashboard of cars to manually send for help. The system will transmit critical information including the exact location of the car to a control centre. Future developments could include sending information about the number of passengers in the vehicle by recognising how many seatbelts are being used.

Police say it could save hundreds of lives a year and potentially cut costs for emergency services by providing accurate information as soon as the accident happens.

A spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said about the implementation of the technology within the emergency services:

"Government is working with mobile network operators, Ofcom and other stakeholders to make sure the infrastructure is in place to handle eCalls from October next year."
