The Government's Road to Zero strategy document has been released. It gives details regarding what vehicles will be exempt from the 2040 ban, which prohibits petrol and diesel engine vehicles from being manufactured and sold in the UK. The Government has said that they are taking a "technology neutral" approach to making all cars and vans "effectively zero emission". It's been confirmed that plug-in hybrid vehicles will be included as part of the strategy to reduce emissions, which answers the question in last week's blog about what vehicles would be sold beyond the ban.

The Road to Zero document indicates that new plug-in hybrid vehicles with a zero emission range of between 25 and 50 miles could be allowed to be sold beyond 2040, after the Government stated “a 50-mile continuous zero emission range could cover up to 98% of all UK journeys and a 25-mile continuous zero emission range could cover up to 94%”.

Plug-in hybrids made today run on zero emission battery power for around 30 miles, so if the mandatory zero emission range is set to 50 miles minimum, by 2040 vehicle manufactures should be able to achieve these targets. However, self-charging hybrids which require running on petrol to charge their batteries are likely to be banned along with pure petrol and diesel vehicles.
