The Mayor of London has launched a van scrappage scheme for the most polluting vans to help clean up London’s lethal air. The scheme launched on Friday, ahead of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which comes into force this April, and aims to help small business owners and charities switch to low emission vehicles.
Who qualifies for the London scrappage scheme?
You're eligible for the scrappage scheme if you're a micro business and can prove that they're registered at an address in a London borough or the City of London and have:
- 10 or fewer employees;
- up to £632k turnover OR up to £316k balance sheet total in the preceding and current financial year; and
- Companies House registration as an active company in the UK OR be VAT registered in the UK.
Charities must be an entity registered with the Charity Commission as an active charity.
What vehicles qualify for the London scrappage scheme?
Any vehicles you intend to scrap through the scheme must be:
- a van or minibus owned by a registered micro business, or charity, for more than 12 calendar months before 22nd February 2019;
- insured for business use;
- road taxed with a valid MOT; and
- scrapped at an approved Authorised Treatment Facility.
The vehicle must also fail to meet London's ULEZ standards to be eligible for the scrappage scheme.

How to apply for a van scrappage deal?
To see if you qualify for the scheme, visit the Transport for London scrappage scheme page, view the options available and fill in the application form.
When you scrap your van, options include £6,000 towards running costs of a new electric model, or £3,500 to fund cleaner transport alternatives.
To qualify for the funding you must recycle your vehicle at an Authorised Treatment Facility and get a DVLA Certificate of Destruction proving the vehicle has been permanently removed from the road (TfL will require a copy of this to complete your application and release the funding).
Where should I scrap my van?
When scrapping your van, you must specify that you require a DVLA Certificate of Destruction. Without this, if a recycling centre deems a vehicle roadworthy, in some cases, they may return it to the road and transfer ownership rather than recycling and your vehicle would no longer be eligible for the scrappage funding.
All CarTakeBack recycling centres are fully licensed Authorised Treatment Facilities. Visit CarTakeBack.com for an instant quote, let us know this is part of the van scrappage scheme, and we'll make sure you get a DVLA Certificate of Destruction. We'll even collect it from you wherever you are in London and pay for the vehicle!
What if I don't qualify for the van scrappage scheme?
If you don't qualify for the scheme but still have an old car or van you'd like to scrap, we'll give you an instant quote to recycle your vehicle. Just enter your registration and postcode online or give us a call.
