Oxford Plans To Go Emissions Free

With pressures on local authorities to reduce emissions in town centres, Oxford are proposing to have the first Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) in the UK, this means banning all petrol and diesel cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) from the centre of the city in just 2 years' time.

The decision to create this zone in Oxford city centre was as a result of a report that revealed that despite levels dropping by nearly 40% across the majority of Oxford, there are still illegal levels of nitrogen dioxide in parts of the city.

The plan, proposed by Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council, is to enforce the first zone in 2020. Their aim is to ban all non electric vehicles (EVs) across the city by 2035. This proposed deadline puts them 5 years ahead of the Government's planned nationwide ban on sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles and it's thought that other local authorities are looking to develop similar initiatives.

The suggested zones for Oxford's emissions free areas

The proposed zones are as follows:

  • Red: Combustion fuel taxis, cars, and LCVs banned from this area from 2020.
  • Orange: The ZEZ expands to this area for taxis, buses, LCVs and cars in 2025.
  • Green: In 2030 the exclusion zone will expand into this area for the affected vehicle types in 2030.

All non EVs that were not included in the exclusion zones implemented by 2030 will be affected by the ZEZ green area in 2035.

The city council has received £500,000 of funding from the Government to install electric charging points for taxis and a further £800,000 to install 100 points for public use, so it looks like the city's preparations for a combustion engine free area are well under way. However, they are planning to have further consultations with business owners and members of the public who will be impacted by the ZEZ later this year, giving people the opportunity to raise any concerns about the plan.

We look forward to seeing how the plans go ahead!
