July saw scrap car prices take a slight hit. August however sees average scrap car prices maintain. Although prices may not be the highest seen this year, they’re still higher than previous months and much higher than this time last year.
In August 2020 prices were at £162, making those in August 2021 55% higher year on year, that’s an increase of £88 in a year! These high values for scrap cars look set to continue as we head into September but as ever, there’s no certainty.
There are many factors that can influence the scrap value of your car, including the global demand for scrap metal, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and location of your car.
About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The Ford Focus still holds strong at the top of the most frequently scrapped cars with CarTakeBack. The average price for a Ford Focus decreased by 4% to £238, that’s down by £10 compared to July 2021.
August saw some changes to cars in the top 5, the cars in the 3rd and 4th spots switched places, the Vauxhall Corsa dropped to 4th, being over taken by the Ford Fiesta. Plus the Peugeot 206 lost the 5th spot, the place was taken by the Renault Clio.
There were no increases to the scrap prices for the top 5 cars, however, the percentage changes month on month weren’t too considerable. The top three all saw minor decreases whilst the bottom two maintained.
