Scrap car prices in the first quarter of 2023 have been stable month on month, varying by just £2 each month. As in February, March saw prices fall by less than 1%. As we move into spring and the weather begins to pick up, will we see scrap car prices pick up too?

Scrap car prices in March were just 0.7% lower than those in February. The average price in March breaks the six month streak of prices being above £340. Prices for scrap cars were up by 5% compared to March 2022, which is an increase of £15 year on year. There are many factors that influence the scrap value of a car, such as the demand for scrap metal and reusable car parts, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and even the location of your car.

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Top cars scrapped in March

Each month in 2023, the most frequently scrapped car with CarTakeBack has been the Ford Focus. In March the average scrap value of a Ford Focus was £382. The average price for a Ford Focus actually increased by 1% compared to the average value in February.

Of the top 5 cars scrapped, just two saw a decrease. The Vauxhall Zafira made it back into the top 5, with the value reaching just over £400!
