Scrap Car Price Update September 2021

Posted on 5th Oct 2021 by Rebecca Currier Posted in: Latest News

The average value of scrap cars hit a high recently. During the start of the summer, prices reached almost £260. Since then they’ve been slightly down in comparison. July saw scrap car prices take a slight hit, August saw them maintain, and in September, there was another minor drop. Though only by 2%, so nothing like the drops to scrap car prices we saw last year which coincided with the impact of Covid lockdowns.

Prices are up compared to September 2020, back then they were at £167, which means the September 2021 prices were 45% higher year on year, that’s a decent increase of £78 in a year! Early signs look as though prices will maintain as we move through October, though it’s never a certainty as scrap metal prices can change daily.

There are many factors that can influence the scrap value of a car, such as the global demand for scrap metals, plus the make, model, age, weight, condition, and even location of your car.

About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Top Cars Scrapped in September

The Ford Focus still holds strong at the top of the most frequently scrapped cars with CarTakeBack. The average scrap value of a Ford Focus increased by 2% to £243, that’s up by £5 compared to August.

Despite an overall drop of 2% to average scrap car values, the top 5 all maintained or increased the value slightly. September saw the same vehicles in the top 5, just the Vauxhall Corsa took 2nd spot, switching places with the Vauxhall Astra, which this month fell to the 4th spot. Even though it fell into 4th place, the Astra had the biggest increase in value of 3%.
