Scrap car prices on offer in May were on top! Scrap car metal values have continued to rise month on month since February this year. Meaning that the prices in May were the highest of 2019 so far! The average price being paid for a scrap car in May was 3% higher than April. As well as being 37% higher than the prices paid for cars in May 2018!

About CarTakeBack's Scrap Car Price Index

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It's updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. The prices are shown as a percentage, using the first month as the base price.

We've taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, by adjusting the prices to show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

How old are scrap cars?

This month we're taking a closer look at the average age of cars being scrapped. We found that in May this year most of the cars scrapped were aged between 10 and 20 years old, with the biggest volume of cars being 15 years old. The oldest car to be scrapped this month was a Rover 110 at the ripe old age of 55!
