It seems diesel cars are in the news every time you read it lately! The latest news about them is that there will be an increase to diesel car tax rates which will affect those who purchase and register a diesel car after the 1st April 2018. If you bought your car before this date you won't be affected.

Diesel tax to rise in April 2018

The Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) will go up by one tax band in their First-Year Rate and will apply to any diesel car that is not certified to the Real Driving Emissions 2 (RDE2) standard. Those that are certified will be exempt.

It was announced at the Autumn Budget 2017 that the revenue raised will fund the measures set out in the ‘UK plan for tackling roadside nitrogen dioxide concentrations’ and facilitate a Clean Air Fund.

The inflated rates, some of which will go up by £500, are being introduced with the aim of improving air pollution, reducing the amount of deaths linked to respiratory problems, air quality and encouraging drivers to switch to low emissions vehicles.

Over the next few months the cost of owning a diesel car will more than likely increase, and drivers will be encouraged to take advantage of the Government grants which are available from car dealerships and manufacturers when they switch to a lower emissions vehicle, such as an electric or hybrid model.
