The Land Rover Defender Has Been Scrapped

It's sad news for 4x4 lovers. The last of the iconic Land Rover Defenders has just rolled off the production line. While hundreds of current and former Jaguar Land Rover employees gathered at the famous Solihull plant to mark the occasion, Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, summed it up perfectly why the Defender is such a legendary car: “The Defender and its Series Land Rover predecessors contain a rare quality; they connect with people emotionally."

As the official scrap car recycling partner to Jaguar Land Rover, CarTakeBack has recycled thousands of old Land Rovers over the last eleven years, but we don't see as many as we'd like! This is probably explained by Land Rover having reported in the past that a massive 70% of the cars they've ever made are still on the road. As the oldest one that we've recycled was the ripe old age of 49, we can certainly believe this!

The Defender is a continuation of the very first Land Rover which came on to the scene in April 1948 and was modelled on war-time Jeeps. Built in Solihull in the West Midlands, the Defender has been exported all around the world.   You're just as likely to see farmers driving it around with a winch on the front and covered in mud, as you are with it looking brand spanking new with a young urban professional behind the wheel, as if the most off-roading it's ever done is in a picnic car park.

The popular 4x4 has enjoyed some fantastic publicity over the years, from being the Queen's car of choice for driving around her estate, to playing a starring role in James Bond car chases.

With their robust, quality car making and extensive promotion, it's no wonder Jaguar Land Rover have grown to become the UK's largest car manufacturer.

Watch this space though, as Jaguar Land Rover are working on a new model - we can't wait to see it and look forward to recycling it (although we doubt there'll be any to scrap for a while!).
