Today the UK government have revealed its clean air strategy, which includes a ban on all new diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2040. Ministers also announced a £255m fund to help local councils tackle air pollution, which they can put towards things such as changing road layouts and encouraging people to use public transport. £40m of that fund will be available immediately for the local councils.

The Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) want to "inject additional urgency" to the clean air strategy, so councils have eight months to come up with their initial plans for cutting emissions, which is a reduction from the 18 months that was suggested before.

In addition, to help with the phase out of combustion engine cars, a new Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill will enable the government to require that electric vehicle charge points are installed at fuel retailers and motorway services.

It was expected that a diesel scrappage scheme will also be announced, but this was bypassed for now. Thoughts are that ministers will consult on a scrap incentive in the autumn.

The UK aren't the only country to be pushing forward with emission measures, with more and more countries taking steps to tackle the issue.
