Unicorn theatre gives car donations a standing ovation!

Welcome to September! The prospect of 'back to school' might not fill everyone with joy, but something that will is our new Charity Car Partner of the Month... The Unicorn! This wonderful company is the UK’s leading professional theatre for young audiences, dedicated to inspiring and invigorating young people of all ages and abilities, and empowering them to explore the world – on their own terms – through theatre.

The Unicorn's purpose built home at London Bridge contains two theatres, four floors of public space and two rehearsal studios; allowing the company to work with some of the world’s most exciting theatre-makers to produce, present and tour a surprising, innovative and broad range of work that is honest, refreshing and international in outlook, serving an audience aged between 2 to 21.

What makes the Unicorn so special is that it specifically targets those who have the least access to the arts by ensuring that over 10% of all of their tickets are free, meaning that in last year, over 6,000 tickets were made available to disadvantaged schoolchildren and community groups across London. This year the theatre plans to increase its outreach with the help of generous supporters (and hopefully car donations!), engaging more young people with the Unicorn and using the power of theatre to inspire and empower disadvantaged groups in the community.

To give you an idea of the extent of Unicorn's work and reach... They create and deliver 15-20 productions every year, in over 600 performances, to 65,000 children and their families, and a further 10-20,000 on tour in the UK and beyond. Another 10,000 people on top of that experience the Unicorn through free weekend events and workshops and in visits to festivals and fetes. Just reading those figures made us tired!

The Unicorn relies on the support of donations to ensure ticket prices are affordable, and that they can reach the widest range of young audiences through their extensive schools programme and community work. Over the last four years the Unicorn has delivered almost 400 workshops to over 13,000 schoolchildren. Recent projects include work with Young Carers, teenage mothers and their babies, refugee groups, and Looked After Children with Disabilities. It’s work like this – detailed, targeted, high impact, and leaving a lasting legacy within its community – that changes young people’s perceptions about and ambitions for what they can do and be.

The Charity Car team is already envious of the audiences for the Unicorn's new 2016-2017 artistic season featuring 19 productions, which the Unicorn team says is shaping up to be their most exciting year yet for audiences aged from six months to adulthood. Highlights include adaptations of Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man, the epic Greek myth Jason and the Argonauts, and an adaptation of Jill Tomlinson’s classic The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. We've also heard they are welcoming back their own 5-star hit Baddies: the Musical for Christmas!

But it's not Christmas yet, so back to September and our unique Partner of the Month. Please spread the word about this fantastic organisation and we were going to say break a leg, but maybe we should save that for the actors!
