Swedish car manufacturers, Volvo, have announced that from 2019, all cars they make will be either hybrid or electric. Making Volvo the first major car maker to make the decision to phase out combustion engines.

Volvo Cars president and chief executive, Håkan Samuelsson, had this to say:

"This is about the customer. People increasingly demand electrified cars, and we want to respond to our customers' current and future needs."

The move has also been prompted by EU targets on emissions for car makers, and that some countries are planning to ban the sale of petrol vehicles in the not too distant future.

Volvo goes electric. A Volvo being charged.

This announcement from Volvo will see them launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021. They intend to make both petrol and diesel hybrid versions of the cars available too.

Volvo are also working on driverless vehicles and should have one ready by 2020. Though you might have seen in the news recently that while testing the system in Australia they're struggling to get it to recognise jumping kangaroos on the roads!

We look forward to seeing the new cars on offer from Volvo when they hit the market in 2019.
