Step by step guide on taxing your car

Since paper tax discs were abolished, DVLA have made it easy to tax your car online.

1. Getting started

You'll need:

  • Your car's registration number.
  • Your tax reminder letter (V11).

If you don't have your (V11), don't worry, you can use one of the below instead:

  • your V5C registration certificate (log book) that’s in your name;
  • your new keeper supplement (V5C/2) if you’ve just bought the vehicle (if it's registered in Northern Ireland and you only have the new keeper supplement, you'll have to go to your local post office to tax your car and take your insurance certificate or cover note); or
  • your ‘last chance’ warning letter.

2. Taxing your car

  1. Go to the Taxing a vehicle page on the website.
  2. Enter your reference number from the document you used in step 1, then select 'Continue'.
  3. Your vehicle details and tax status will be shown. If these are correct, select 'Continue'. If not, press the cancel button to start again or call DVLA on 0300 123 4321 for advice.
  4. Select whether you would prefer to pay by card or by direct debit, then select 'Continue'.
  5. If paying by direct debit you can choose to pay monthly, otherwise it's 6 or 12 months.

As soon as you've confirmed your payment details, your car tax will be renewed! You'll be given an application reference number and if you left your details you'll also receive a confirmation text or email from DVLA.

Remember, it's now all online so no need to display a tax disc in your car anymore. If you want to double check your car has been taxed or to find out how much the road tax for your car will be see Checking if a car has been taxed and Check how much the tax on a car will be below.
