April has been another good month for scrap car prices. The value of scrap metal has continued to rise after a similar jump last month. The average price being paid for a scrap car is 6% higher than it was in March, and an impressive 34% higher than what was being paid in April 2018!
We are currently seeing the highest prices paid for scrap cars in over a year, as we move into May the prices look like they could maintain. So, if you’re looking to scrap your old car, now is a great time to do it to get the most money for your motor!
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. The prices are shown as a percentage, using the first month as the base price.
We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, by adjusting the prices to show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

This month we’re taking a closer look at the types of vehicles being scrapped, focussing on fuel types, we found that in April 23% of vehicles recycled were diesel and 77% were petrol. We recently reported that we’d seen a rise in the percentage of diesel vehicles being scrapped compared to petrol vehicles. This could be due to Low Emission Zones being introduced in cities and people making greener choices when it comes to their chosen method of transport.
