The height of summer saw temperatures soar, unfortunately scrap car prices haven’t followed the weather! In August we saw prices take a very modest hit, with prices reducing by 1% compared to those in July.
Factors such as delays to car manufacturing, and the demand for scrap metal fluctuating impact the prices being paid for scrap cars. Although month on month prices have fallen, scrap car prices were up by a decent 32% compared to August last year, that’s an increase of £81 year on year! So now is still a good time to scrap your car and get cash in the bank.
There are many factors that influence the scrap value of a car, such as the demand for scrap metal and reusable car parts, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and even the location of your car.
About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The most frequently scrapped car with CarTakeBack was the Ford Focus. In August the average scrap price for a Ford Focus was £365. That’s down by just £3, compared to the average value in July.
Despite average prices decreasing, the value of three cars in the top list increased and those that reduced only did by 1 or 2%. All values of the top car scrapped remain over £300.
