Scrap Car Price Update August 2023

August average scrap car price £283

August sees the fourth month that scrap car prices have fallen by 5% compared to July, making them the lowest average prices this year. Despite being the lowest of the year so far, your car could be worth well above the average, as the value of scrap cars is based on many factors. The demand for scrap metal and reusable car parts, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and even the location of your car, all have an impact on the value of it. The average age of cars scrapped in August was 17 years,  so if you have a younger car, you’ll likely get more money than the average. In fact some makes and models of car have bucked the trend and maintained the price, and some even had big increases, more on that below.

About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Top cars scrapped in August

August becomes the eighth month this year that the most frequently scrapped car was the Ford Focus. In August the average scrap value of a Ford Focus was £323, that’s £40 above the average price for all vehicles, and only £1 drop compared to July.

Whilst the Ford Focus holds strong, closely followed by the Vauxhall Corsa, there’s been some changes to the other most frequently scrapped cars. The Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Astra and Zafira, which were regulars in the top list, all drop off in August to be replaced by the Citroen C3, Vauxhall Isignia and the Peugeot 206.

Despite the overall price dropping, the top five cars scrapped have all avoided a loss! The Vauxhall Corsa sees a huge increase of 22%, and the Citroen C3 rose by 11%, great news if you have one of those on the drive ready to sell!
