What a year it’s been – for scrap car prices too! We’re seeing the year out on a high at CarTakeBack, the prices on offer for scrap cars in December were the highest we’ve seen in 2019!
After seeing a rise last month, the upward trend continued into the festive season, prices increased in December by 2% compared to November. Prices for scrap cars in December 2019 are also on top compared to those in December 2018, 8% higher!
We’re looking forward to seeing what 2020 brings.
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. The prices are shown as a percentage, using the first month as the base price.
We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, by adjusting the prices to show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Let’s look back at how scrap car prices fared in 2019…
January saw the year in with a frosty start, a drop to scrap prices which continued into February. March gave us a spring in our step as we reported an increase to scrap car prices of 4% putting things ahead of where they were at the start of 2019. Prices continued to rise in April and May, we then saw prices level out in June, July until the summer holidays arrived and we saw a drop. The August drop to prices continued into September and October. November saw things get back on top and that rise continued into December. Overall the scrap car prices in each month in 2019 were higher than those seen in the same month in 2018.
More 15 year old cars were bought for scrap than any other age, with most cars being aged between 12 and 18 years.
We scrapped more Ford vehicles than any other make of car, with Vauxhall and Peugeot in second and third positions. The top three models scrapped were the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Corsa and the Peugeot 206.
More silver cars were scrapped than any other colour vehicle. There aren’t many pink cars out there, we only scrapped 12 pink vehicles in 2019!
Of the vehicles scrapped, 72% were petrol and 28% were diesel.
