After a year of Covid-19 restrictions, December saw a subdued festive season. During 2020, fortunately we were able to maintain our service throughout the restrictions across the UK. We’re happy to report some good news that December saw the highest average scrap car prices of the year! Making it the eighth consecutive month to show an increase to the average scrap car value. Prices were up by 6% compared to November and compared to this time last year, they’re up a considerable 16%.
There are many factors that can influence the scrap value of your car, including the global demand for scrap metal, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and location of your car.
About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
For the last six months the Ford Focus has been the most common car scrapped with CarTakeBack. The average scrap price for a Ford Focus increased by 5% in December to £171, compared to £163 in November.
December saw a change to the top five cars scrapped during the month, the Renault Clio dropped off the list and the Vauxhall Astra makes it into the top five.
There have been increases across the board to the values of the top five cars scrapped. The Vauxhall Astra has seen the biggest increase, 12%, compared to November’s average value.
