The year ended with a drop in the average value of a scrap car – though the loss was of just £4! Prices in December were just above the lowest value seen this year, £270, which was in October.
As in November, the average age of cars scrapped in December was 17 years – that’s a year older than those in October, seemingly we’re keeping our cars on the road for a bit longer.
Despite prices dropping by 1%, you could get even more cash in the bank for your car as the price of a scrap car is based on numerous factors. Including, the demand for scrap metal and reusable car parts, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and even your location, these all impact on the value of your car.

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The most frequently scrapped car with CarTakeBack was the Ford Focus. In December the average scrap value of a Ford Focus was £283. Not all models followed the general drop to values, the Corsa, Fiesta and Zafira all saw increases. It’s a great time if you’re the owner of an old Ford Fiesta, the value of those increased by 9%!
