Posted on 2nd Mar 2023 by Rebecca Currier Posted in: Latest News

We’ve seen a steady start to the year as the average price for a scrap car is maintained into February. Dropping by less than half a percent month on month. The current scrap car value is just £19 lower than the highest on record!

February average scrap car price £340

Scrap car prices in February were just 0.4% lower than those in January. That makes February the sixth consecutive month that prices have been £340 or above. Prices for scrap cars were up by 21% compared to February 2022, which is increase of £59 year on year! It’s a great time to sell your scrap car whilst prices are still high.

There are many factors that influence the scrap value of a car, such as the demand for scrap metal and reusable car parts, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and even the location of your car.

Take a look at the last 12 months trend in the chart below.

About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index

The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.

Top cars scrapped in February

The most frequently scrapped car with CarTakeBack was again the Ford Focus. In February the average scrap value of a Ford Focus was £378. The average price for a Ford Focus actually decreased by 3% compared to the average value in January. That’s back to the level we saw in December 2022.

Of the top 5 cars scrapped, all but the Ford Fiesta saw a decrease. The scrap value of a Ford Fiesta rose by 8%, that’s an extra £24! The Vauxhall Zafira had been in the top cars scrapped list until falling into sixth place in February, with the Renault Clio overtaking it into fifth spot.
