It’s been a fantastic year so far for customers scrapping their cars, they’re getting some of the highest values seen! May was no exception, another month on month price rise meant that May had the highest prices seen so far this year and was the 12th month in a row that we’ve reported a price increase!
Each month in 2021, the average prices have been above £200! A great improvement compared to this time last year when, the impact of the initial Covid lockdown on scrap prices was just beginning to show signs of recovering.
This May, prices were up a whopping 83% compared to May 2020, and the average price for a scrap car has increased by £112 year on year! Month on month, prices increased in May by £10 compared to April.
With such a boom to scrap car prices over the last year, it’s uncertain as to whether prices will continue to increase into the Summer, we’re eager to see how things go throughout the next few weeks of June.
There are many factors that can influence the scrap value of your car, including the global demand for scrap metal, as well as the make, model, age, weight, condition, and location of your car.
About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout the UK. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
For the 11th consecutive month, the most commonly scrapped car with CarTakeBack was the Ford Focus. The average scrap price for a Ford Focus increased slightly, by 1%, compared to April 2021. The average value was also up by 77% compared to May 2020.
May saw no change to 2nd place either with the Vauxhall Corsa holding on. The Vauxhall Astra jumped above the Ford Fiesta to take 3rd spot and the Renault Clio took 5th from the Peugeot 206. It was a good month for Vauxhall Astra prices which were up by 14%. There was just one drop to the average prices in the top five, that was for a Ford Fiesta, after seeing a 15% increase in April, it was down by 11% in May.
