Recycled tyres being converted into fuel

Recycling and reusing waste is hitting the headlines a lot lately, and it’s encouraging people to come up with solutions.

Researchers at Green Distillation Technologies (GDT) have developed a way of using ‘destructive distillation’ technology to recycle old tyres into carbon, steel and oil, which can be used as a source of biofuel.

Tim Rose, Managing Director of Southern Oil, prefers to use old tyres as the bio-oil source over using plants and imported fuels, as there is all year round source of tyres and it uses environmental waste as a valuable raw material.

Time Rose has said;

“The first ‘trickle’ of oil is now being provided to us by the Green Distillation Technologies tyre recycling plant. We have found that the oil they are providing is quite easy to convert to diesel fuel as the main refining step we have to make is the removal of the sulphur. In time it could become a suitable feedstock for automotive petrol and even jet fuel.”

Southern Oil are currently building an advanced biofuels plant in Queensland, Australia to harness technology like this, and we are excited to see it progress in the future!
