Yes, your registration certificate (also known as the V5C or logbook) is not essential when you scrap a car. However, it helps if you can try to find it as it can make things easier. If you don’t have your registration certificate, you’ll be asked to provide personal ID instead.
If you don’t have your logbook you’ll still be able to follow the usual process for scrapping your car. We’ll find you the best scrap price even if you’ve lost your logbook. Plus, it doesn’t matter if your car is ready to be recycled, has plenty of miles left in it, or it has high mileage, is damaged, broken down, faulty or has no MOT – you can get a price to sell your car no matter what the condition.
When you sell your scrap car, you’ll need to inform the DVLA. To do this without a V5, you should write to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1BD, giving your name and address, your car registration, the make and model, the date you sold or disposed of your car to us, the name and address of the CarTakeBack Branch (which will be shown on your confirmation email).
You’ll be sent a letter confirming you’re no longer the registered keeper of the car, and a refund cheque for any full months left on your vehicle tax – if you pay by Direct Debit, it’ll be cancelled automatically.
The value of your scrap car can depend on many factors, including the global demand for scrap metal, as well as the make and model, age, weight, condition, and even the location of your car. Plus, whether there are any reusable parts on your vehicle. So, each scrap car price will vary.
To find out how much your scrap car is worth, just tell us your reg and postcode, either using our online form or by calling our Customer Services Team, and you’ll instantly find out the value of your scrap car. There’s no obligation and all quotes are guaranteed for seven days.
